Does the Flash Player attempt to install on-the-fly updates when watching videos?

Hello,

I want to ask you about some strange behavior associated with the Adobe Flash Player. My concern is, that some six months ago, a strange incident occurred when I watched a Flash video on a certain site. Immediately when the video player loaded, Flash Player asked me for elevated permissions (Windows UAC prompt). The publisher had been verified as Adobe Systems Incorporated, so I clicked Yes, and then I saw a window appear that was supposedly installing a Flash Player update, yet when the progress bar had reached 100%, I was told there had been an error and that the update had failed. I cheched the Adobe Flash Player home page, and I could see that I already had the latest version of Flash Player. This confused me and made me a bit suspicious. The issue did not occur in any other site, expect this one (and it's not there anymore). I don't suppose there is any legitimate way webmasters could force Flash Player to update itself or check for updates?

I Googled for this strange behavior, but couldn't find posts from other people who had experienced this, or any relevant results, except for one that was about a particular malware using a similar tactic to infect PCs. So I've been worried for quite some time that my system might have been compromised by hackers. I've ran AV scans from many different software vendors, but they found nothing (that still does not guarantee anything though).

Can you please tell me if Flash Player has ever had such a functionality for delivering legitimate software updates? If so, I suppose it has been discontinued since?

OS: Windows 7, Browser: Firefox (can't remember any version numbers).
